RESUMO

This paper deals with the opinions of Surinamese about the effect on health of cigarette smoking. No matter whether the people pertain to a certain sex, ethnic group, sect, educational level or residence, the same tendency is encountered. The percentage of those who filled in "no opinion" in the questionnaire was higher in non-smokers than in smokers, higher in females than in males, and higher in rural than in urban areas. "Beneficial/harmless" was checked off more frequently by smokers and by males. "Harmfull" was ticked off in a higher rate by non-smokers. More smokers crossed "harmful only when smoking excessively". It is clear that smokers tried to disguise the truth about the risk on health of cigarette smoking. In order to observe differences at the first glance, two ratios and a "factor" have been introduced: ratio 1 ("harmful": "beneficial/harmless"), ratio 2 ("harmful":"harmful only when smoking excessively"), "factor" (=ratio1 x ratio2). Ratios 1 and 2 were higher in non-smokers and in rural areas. Ratio 1 was higher in females; ratio 2 in males. The "factor" was highest in non-smokers, in females, and in rural areas. Ratio 1 was larger than ratio 2 (this means more "harmful only whem smoking excessively" than "beneficial/harmless")......(AU)

RESUMO

More than 13,000 18-55 year old Red Cross male candidate blood donors have been examined during the 1959-1978 period. In 14 tables the results are presented, mainly divided into ethnic and age groups. The means of the weights and heights are higher than encountered previously and afterwards. However, our group consists in general of rather healthy people, and therefore the findings approximate normal values. The medians are somewhat lower than the means. The 1969-1978 figures are usually higher than those of 1959-1968. In this survey, the Europeans have the highest average weight and height; the Amerindians the lowest......(AU)

RESUMO

Health Information and Education (HIE) is that part of Medicine which studies the attitude of man regarding health, sickness, accident and disability, as well as the interaction of the environment with this attitude. HIE aims to influence the attitude of man and community as their contribution to a healthy life. The Laswell' formula indicates the line of action to be pursued by HIE. Based on this formula, the author presents a model by his design, including methodology. Furthermore, a warning is given concerning being tactful in presenting HIE and to be necessarily acquainted with the target group

RESUMO

An antropometric examination (1982) amongst 2,172 Surinamese military candidate-recrutes, brought forward a difference in stature and body structure between the various races. Regression-analysis showed that weight can be predicted best from: lenght, the total of skinfold measures (triceps and subscapula) and the average of the left and right femur-condyle width. Because this examination was carried out with an aselect population, only average values were found, which can thus serve only as comparison material. These averages also prove that the same parameters can be used for weight measures of all races

RESUMO

Out of 56,305 patients with 674,086 in-patient days (on an average 12.0) of the Paramaribo general hopitals during the 1975-1976 period, 9,569 with 45,35 in-patient days (on an average 4.7) have a normal delivery, and 1101,487 with 51.582 in-patient days (on an average 4.9) are normally born in the hospital; altogether 20,056 with 96,940 in patient days, i.e. 35.6 and 14.4 per cent respectively. Hence, there are nearly twice as many females as males admitted to the hospital. Under 15 years and from 50 years onwards, there are slightly more male than female patients. However, in the 15-49 year group, the male/female ratio is nearly 1:4. More than 40 per cent of the 15-49 year females have a normal delivery in the hospital, occupying 25 per cent of the in-patient days of the group. More than 80 per cent of the normal deliveries take place in the 15-29 age group, which occupy nearly 80 per cent of the corresponding in-patient days. Seventy-five percent of the babies are normally born in the Hospital, taking up 57 per cent of the in-patient days. Absolutely, the Creoles from the main group, followed by the East-Indians. Per 100 of the specific population subgroup, the Creoles take the first place, followed by the "others". The males stay on an everage longer in the hospital than the females. From the 20-29 age group on, the average duration of hospitalization increases gradually to reach a peak in the group from 60 years onwards. The "others" have the longest average lenght of stay, followed by the creoles. 7.7 per cent of all patient are 60 years or older, occupying 21 per cent of all in-patient days. Per 100 of the specific population subgroup, the number of elderlies is 9.8 with 322 in-patient days. The number of elderlies, of their in-patient days and average patient stay are higher in males than in females. This paper shows that: (1) about 70 per cent of all births take place in a hospital; and that on an average: (2) one in 10 inhabitants is hospitalized per year; (3) an inhabitant spends more than one day per year in a hospital. The average bed occupancy rate is 73.2 per cent, and the turnover rate 22.4......(AU)

RESUMO

In the seventies, surveys on smoking habits in university students and student nurses were carried out in Suriname. The total smoking rates were approx. 80 per cent. They were higher in Paramaribo than in rural districts. The percentages of homes in which housemates smoked were 65-79 per cent. The percentages of males were highest concerning: smoking, heavy smoking, smokers being offered cigarettes by housemates, occasions of smoking, those purchasing cigarettes, attempt to quit smoking, opinion that a cigarette is tasty. Higher percentages of females were encountered regarding: light smoking, permission and cognizance of their parents about their smoking, opinion that the taste of a cigarette is nasty......(AU)

RESUMO

The medical care in Suriname started with the Amerindian medicine-man in the prehistorical period. The African medicine-man entered later and the surgeon entered with the arrival of the Europeans. The surgeon was trained in Europe and here in Suriname he trained his successors. In the 18th century some university-trained settled down, while all medical affairs were settled with the establishment of the Collegium Medicum in 1782. A physician could no longer settle without an adequate diploma or without taking an examination. In 1838 the "Commission for Research and Control" replaced the Collegium and a division was made in urban and regional physicians. At the Medical School, opened in 1882 and closed in 1891, 24 district-physicians were trained. After reopening in 1899, physicians, surgeons and obstetricians were trained, but from 1939 onwards only physicians. On 26 September 1969 the Medical School was closed at the proclamation of the Medical Faculty of the University of Suriname. The school turned out 313 medics, and 99 continued their study abroad and 22 finished it at the Surinamese Medical Faculty. Of the 434 students, 87 graduated to doctor medicine and 173 became specialists. P.C. Flu and E. van der Kuyp became respectively professor and professor extraordinary in Leiden. 12 alumni, all doctor medicinae and medical specialist, became professors at the Surinamese University. RESUMO

Wet-rice-fields in shell-ridge areas were the main schistosomiasis mansoni foci in Surinam. This statement is based on: 1. epidemiological grounds: higher rates in rice-growers, in males and in adults; high density of Biomphalaria glabrata in rice-fields; pollution of rice-fields with faeces; 2. longitudinal parasitological investigations: during a survey in 1962 3 out of 7 rice-fields contained cercariae shedding Biomphalaria glabrata. The author also tried to refute the conclusion of REIJENGA and HEINEMANN that peridomiciliary habitats were in general the most important sources of contagion. However, the author did not underrated dug off pits, ditches, etc. in shellridges, whether or not peridomicialiary......(AU)

RESUMO

From 1956 to 1972 mass anti-helminthiasis campaigns were conducted in rural Surinam. In door-to-door surveys, faeces of 100,012 persons were examined. One single faeces specimen was obtained per individual and concentrated. Although the law requires that every littoral house be provide with toilet facilities, infants and toddlers defaecate inside and around the houses, seeding the soil with helminth ova. The overall rates were 30.5 per cent for Ascaris and 6.7 per cent for Trichuris. Both rates were usually higher in suburban than in rural areas. They were highest in Amerindians, Bushnegroes and Creoles; and lowest in Javanese. They were higher in women than in men, and higher in children than in adults. The Ascaris rates were much higher than the Trichuris rates, although Surinam has a high annual rainfall......(AU)

One single faeces specimen was obtained per individual and concentrated. The overall hookworm rate was 34.1 per cent. Although the law requires that every littoral house be provided with toilet facilities etc., polluting the soil with hookworm ova occurs. The hookworm rates are higher in sylvatic and rural areas than in urban and suburban regions. They are highest in Amerindians and Bushnegroes, and lowest in Chinese. They are higher in males than in females, and higher in adults than in children. The hookworm rates in children are associated with the rates of school-children......(AU)
